Description
The Magpie Generating Station is 9 kilometers (5.6 mi) west of the village of Rivière-Saint-Jean in the Minganie Regional County Municipality. The Magpie Generating Station is a 40.6 MW hydroelectric power generating station on the Magpie River in the Côte-Nord region of the province of Quebec, Canada. The project was approved in 2005 and commissioned in 2007.
Falex was selected by Minganie Regional County Municipality for engineering and procurement services on the Magpie Generating Station Grid Reliability Project. The project included upgrading existing transmission lines, converting substation configurations, building new substations, and adding an underground circuit to increase capacity while reducing transmission system congestion.
The project also included rebuilding existing 138kV transmission towers to new double-circuit 230kV steel monopole and lattice tower structures within the existing right of way. Falex led the team’s foundation design using concrete-capped and steel-capped helical steel piles.
Hydroméga partnered with the Minganie Regional County Municipality to build the CDN$75 million facilities. In October 2006 the 42 MW power station was connected to the grid through the 161 kV Arnaud-Natashquan line. The Magpie Hydroelectric Power Station was commissioned in October 2007. It was formally inaugurated on 20 June 2008.
This project was a big opportunity for Falex Structures to make more strong relations with the Minganie Regional County Municipality and expand the team in the infrastructure sector.
