Description

On the FortisBC Coastal Transmission System Project in British Columbia, Falex served as the prime contractor. The construction of the pipeline in a heavily populated metropolitan area presented a number of obstacles, including the requirement for constant traffic management, the submission of provincial and municipal plans, and the necessity for permits.  Numerous project stakeholders and members of the public who use the pipeline right-of-way for recreation were interacted with by Falex.

The project included over 300 facility crossings while working in parallel proximity to Metro Vancouver’s water main and force main sanitary lines as well as the existing FortisBC natural gas transmission line. There were 25 road crossings and seven water course crossings on the project.

ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT

  • Urban pipeline construction
  • Horizontal Directional Drilling
  • Direct Pipe Installation
  • Auger Boring
  • Watercourse Bypass
  • Access Matting
  • Trench Shoring

Major crossings of the Trans Canada Highway, Lougheed Highway, and United Boulevard/Mundy Creek were included in the trenchless construction. Due to the close proximity of existing infrastructure and to minimize disruption to the public, crossings had to be redesigned. These crossings were completed using a variety of trenchless techniques. In addition, Falex finished three conventional horizontal direction drilling operations, which benefited both schedule and constructability.
